How Lifestyle Can Impact Pregnancy

Pregnancy ranges from an easy time to a rough time - and varies from woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy.  Chinese medicine is a great way to ensure a healthy pregnancy as it not only supports fetal growth and development, but also addresses any complaints the mother may have.  Following are some basic recommendations that I give all expecting mamas I support.  These are based on a Chinese medical viewpoint with both the mother and fetus in mind.



DIET:

When considering an appropriate diet during pregnancy, Chinese medicine focuses on avoiding foods that lead to heat and dampness, as the body is already naturally abundant in these areas due to the growing fetus. 

By the end of the 1st trimester, women should be avoiding spicy foods, fried and greasy foods, dairy, bananas and concentrated juices (especially orange and tomato). Further dietary recommendations are based on each woman's individual presentation.



PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

It's great to remain active throughout your pregnancy, but your choice of activity shouldn't be draining.  Remember that exercise should feel invigorating - if you're feeling tired, you should stop.



EMOTIONS:

Women should avoid stress as much as possible while pregnant.  This, of course, is easier said than done.  If you can find ways to encourage relaxation and a peaceful mind, incorporate these into your regular schedule.  Acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and massage are all examples of appropriate ways to de-stress.
